Coaches

We are proud to introduce the coaches at OFSC! Coaches are a major factor in the development of many life skills such as discipline, a sense of self-worth and accomplishment and respect for goals and aspirations of others. All of our coaches are certified by the National Coaching Certification Program.

PreSkate and CanSkate

Head Coach: Jacqueline Berild

I am a 2011 graduate of Olds High School, and I am planning on furthering my education at the University of Alberta next fall. I have been skating since Kindergarten and this year I am working towards getting my Gold Dances. I have been a PA for 8 years, and last year I was an assistant CANSKATE coach. I have obtained my Phase One Coaching Certificate which enables me to coach CANSKATE, and I will be the head coach for CANSKATE this year. I am really glad I could start my coaching career at the Olds Figure Skating Club, and I plan to coach for many years. Besides skating I have participated in soccer and lacrosse. I enjoy music; I play guitar, bass clarinet, and the piano. The 2011/2012 skating season will be a blast!

Assitant Coach: Janae Sincennes

Hello, my name is Janae Sincennes. I am sixteen years old and a grade 11 student. Skating has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I know it was since my mom put me in at the age of 4, that I’ve been on the ice. Years of hard work and goal setting has enabled me to achieve triple gold status in the Dance, Interpretive and Skills disciplines. I have also passed 2 Diamond Dances. I am currently working on my Senior Silver Freeskate and Diamond Dances. My goal is to obtain that last gold in Freeskate by the time I graduate! In August, I received my NCCP 1 certification in Medicine Hat. I am so excited to start my coaching journey as the Assistant Coach for the CanSkate program this season! This position is the first stepping stone towards my long term goal of becoming a StarSkate coach. This allows me to share my love for skating with children who are eager to learn. In my spare time I enjoy hanging out with friends and family, watching movies, swimming, golfing and listening to music. I am looking forward to a fabulous skating season.

GroupSkate (CanSkate Plus)

Coach: Carol McLean

My name is Carol McLean-Pion, I live in Bowden, work at Olds College and have a small cake decorating business. I taught CANskate, CANfigure, Novice and Power skating in Calgary for 15 years, hold my NCCP Level 2 Coaching Certificate, Skate Canada CANSkate Professional Coach Certificate, Skate Canada CANPower Certificate and Annie’s Edges Seminar (1998). I’ve always had a love for skating but my passion for teaching/coaching came from having a great coach and mentor, that was Patsy Ann Jones, she was my first professional coach many years ago. I loved every moment of coaching at my Calgary club and was heartbroken when I had to retire due too the way to long winter commute, so I look forward to putting the skates back on and sharing the fun of skating with students once again.

StarSkate Coach: Patsy Ann Jones

1958 is the year I started coaching. Oh my gosh. Now we are into the 2010-2011 season… You do the math.

Yes I got my “50 year pin” a couple of years ago now. All my training was done in Australia, where I taught both Australian and New Zealand Champions. Did several television shows and learn to skate programs from the National stations. Performed and produced many, many Ice Shows over the years, both in Australia and Canada. I have reached Gold Status in all forms of figure skating and have also been known to run several successful hockey schools.

I expect total commitment from my students and accept only their very best effort. This attitude has been very beneficial and rewarding, over the years with a great deal of my students successfully reaching Gold level and now able to move onto an even higher level of Diamond status. Several former students are now successfully coaching, evaluating and judging, which makes me very proud of their achievements.

A word of advice, work hard and enjoy your skating, it is something you can do forever and you can do it all over the world.

Coach: Charlsey Whittemore

My name is Charlsey Whittemore, and I have been skating for 13 years. I grew up and skated in Trochu and Three Hills. I have been with the Olds Skating Club for the past two years. I have participated in a synchronized team, both competitive and recreational. As a skater, I’ve completed my Triple Gold in Dance, Skills, and Interpretive and am continuing to work on my Diamond level dances. I was a PA for many years before I started coaching in 2008. I have attained my NCCP Level One Trained StarSkate Coach as well as NCCP CanPowerSkate Certified. On a personal note I have attended Red Deer College for the last two years. This year I’ve transfered to the University of Calgary, where I am taking my Bachelor of Science Degree in Ecology. My goal is to attend Veterinary School and pass my Diamond Dances. During the 2010-2011 season I was Head CanSkate coach for Olds Skating Club. I look forward to 2011-2012 season with Olds Skating Club as a member of its StarSkate Coaching team.
